Canada’s efforts to reduce emissions from buildings are increasingly focused on embodied carbon, but what happens when we overlook the energy and emissions savings those buildings can deliver over their lifetimes?

In a new opinion article published by The Energy Mix, NAIMA Canada’s Executive Director Jay Nordenstrom explains why the National Building Code must account for both embodied and operational carbon. Drawing on NAIMA Canada’s recent lifecycle carbon study, he highlights how improved insulation can offset its additional embodied carbon in approximately three to five years while delivering lower energy costs, reduced emissions, and greater resilience for decades.
