NAIMA Canada Partners With Government of British Columbia and The Consumer Council of Canada in Promoting Energy Efficiency

Ottawa, Ontario – NAIMA Canada, a trade association for manufacturers of fibre glass, rock wool and slag wool insulation products has partnered with the Government of British Columbia and the Consumer Council of Canada to promote energy efficiency in the building sector. The partnership’s role is to educate consumers and the construction industry on the provincial sales tax exemption by the B.C. government for purchases of energy efficient products including insulation. Insulation can dramatically decrease heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, thus reducing operating costs of buildings and conserving energy resources.

“We are very pleased to be working in alliance with the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources in promoting conservation and improving energy efficiency.” said Stephen Koch, Executive Director of NAIMA Canada. “Their new strategy, Energy Efficient Buildings: A Plan for B.C., released by Minister Neufeld in September 2005, contains measures which result in financial savings for consumers, increased comfort and indoor air quality of buildings, and reduced greenhouse gas reductions and smog-creating air emissions.”

The energy efficiency strategy aims to transform the market by improving the energy performance of new and existing buildings in B.C. by 2010, through the following voluntary targets:

  • Achieve an EnerGuide for New Houses rating of 80 in new single family and row house residential buildings, reducing average energy consumption in new homes by 32%;
  • Achieve energy performance of 25% better than Model National Energy Code for Buildings by reducing average energy consumption by 37% in new multi unit residential buildings;
  • Reduce the energy consumption in 12% of the existing single home and row house residential buildings by an average of 17%;
  • Reduce the energy consumption in 16% of existing multi-unit residential buildings by an average of 9%;
  • Achieve an energy performance 25% better than Model National Energy Code for Buildings in new industrial, commercial and institutional buildings and reduce the average energy consumption by 20%; and
  • Reduce the energy consumption in 20% of existing industrial, commercial and institutional buildings by an average of 14%.
